How to do Back Stitch – Step by step instructions

Backstitch or Back stitch is used to outline shapes and is a variation of other stitches like stem or split stitch. This stitch is made from backward direction and is mostly used in hand embroidery.

Start with threading the needle and tie a not at the end of the thread.  Take a fabric (cotton fabric would be good if you are a beginner) hold it with an embroidery hoop. Draw a straight on fabric with pencil or water soluble pen and follow the below steps…

Step 1 :

Back Stitch - 01

Bring the needle out from fabric at point “A”.

Step 2: Back Stitch - 02

Insert the needle at point “B”. This is the first stitch.

Step 3:

Back Stitch - 04

Again take the needle out through point “C” and put it in point “B”.

Step 4:

Back Stitch - 06

Continue the same steps until the end.
